Sony’s PlayStation 5 Event Shows Off Options With, Without 4K Blu-ray Drive

While Sony’s rescheduled PlayStation 5 online event focused mainly on games for its upcoming next-gen console, there were still a few details to glean for those hoping to leverage the device as more than a games machine.

One of the most notable new details was an actual look at the console itself, including a flowing, white-on-black design that spreads outward a bit like flower petals. And while we knew the PS5 would offer a 4K Blu-ray drive, Sony also showed off a drive-free version it’s calling the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition.

Microsoft took a similar approach for the current console generation when it release the Xbox One S All-Digital Edition, and it looks like Sony’s bringing that option to its next-gen console as well.

While no price points were shared, it seems likely that the drive-free Digital Edition will enjoy some sort of price advantage, which could be good news for folks who aren’t interested in physical media for their games or Ultra HD movies.

Beyond the console itself, Sony shared images of a couple accessories, including an HD camera, headset, and a Media Remote.

A close look at the remote reveals cross-pattern directional controls, volume buttons, and rewind/play/fast-forward inputs. Beyond those, however, we can see dedicated buttons for “TV” and one with what appears to be a microphone icon, suggesting this remote could be useful for more than just games and controlling the console itself.

Also curious: a set of four unmarked buttons toward the bottom that could be for dedicated hot keys to specific apps or services. We’ve seen hot keys for Netflix, Sling, and other services on a number of remotes from companies like Roku, so it’s possible these controls could be used for a similar purpose here.

Of course, this is the very first time the public’s seen PS5 hardware, beyond its controller reveal. And we’ll be keeping a close eye on Sony and Microsoft as they share more about their next-gen gaming platforms, especially as more streaming and entertainment details are revealed.
