WarnerBros’ latest release Godzilla vs Kong had a record-setting debut in terms of the Covid-19 era. The movie fought its way into record-breaking box office sales since the start of the pandemic raking in more than $285 million worldwide Deadline reports. Godzilla vs Kong has made its mark as the quickest studio movie release during Covid to hit the $200 million mark internationally (12 days) beating out Tenet which took 24 days.

In the U.S., the film generated $32 million over its debut weekend, nearly double what the previous pandemic record holder Wonder Woman 1984 held. The DC film earned $16.7 million in its first three days, followed by Tom and Jerry which had $14 million. Godzilla vs Kong went on to reach $48.5 million in its first five days of release.

The theater audience turnout was especially impressive given that Godzilla vs Kong was also available on HBO Max the same day at no extra cost to subscribers. Although exact numbers haven’t been released, the studio stated that the film had a “larger viewing audience than any other film or show on HBO Max since launch.”

This successful box office run is injecting hope into the reemergence of the theater experience in a post-Covid world. With more theaters reopening around the globe, big blockbuster films will probably continue to draw more crowds as the world and movie landscape slowly but surely heads back to normalcy.
