CNN and Fox Digital News Sources Saw Record Engagement Numbers During Coronavirus

CNN and Fox News continue their ongoing popularity contest for who has the highest viewership numbers, and last month both saw engagement skyrocket amid pandemic reporting.

FoxNews.com’s dedicated coronavirus landing page was the top viewed on the site, and readers spent five times longer on it than CNN’s similar page, according to data from SimilarWeb. The success largely comes from Fox’s series America Together which has received over 14.6 million views since it’s March 25 launch, according to Adobe Analytics. Fox finished May 2020 as it’s best May on record, reporting a 17% increase from this time last year.

While FOX can count a win for its Coronavirus reporting, CNN.com had 151 Million mobile unique visitors in May, compared to FoxNews.com’s 94 million. CNN is also more popular among millennials garnering 46 million unique multiplatform visitors vs 21 million for Fox. It also seems as though viewers turn to CNN for political coverage. CNN reported 74 million multiplatform unique visitors in May compared to 29.7 million unique visitors for Fox News Politics.

Overall, CNN.com reported 172 million U.S. unique visitors in May, equaling out to be 64% of the domestic Internet population, according to Comscore.

As far as social media goes, Fox’s fans seem to be more enthusiastic about chiming in. Fox held its title as the most engaged news brand on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter for the 69th month in a row driving 52.6 million total interactions, according to Socialbakers. It received 31.8 million on Facebook interactions in May and 20.4 more on Instagram.
