While Showtime is a name long synonymous with movies, their streaming service sort of sits in the background behind all the other big names. You don’t hear much about Showtime streaming, but it’s been there for a decade now, quietly maintaining a decent subscriber base.
So what are the best movies on Showtime? Here’s a look at a few of our picks from five genres.
If you’re not a subscriber, Showtime’s streaming service costs $11 a month on its own and it’s also available as an add on for several live TV streaming services including Hulu, Sling, and YouTube TV.
The Babadook (Horror)
If you’re a horror fan, The Babadook is a film you just can’t miss. It doesn’t rely on jump scares or cliches, but it tells a genuinely scary story involving a mother and her young child. Without spoiling too much, it deals with nightmares the child has, and you’re never quite sure what’s real and what’s not. When a mysterious pop-up book shows up in the child’s bedroom with images that look just like his dreams, mother and son realize the nightmares may just be coming true.
Why stream it?
Because it’s a beautifully done film that’s absolutely unnerving at times and packed with tension throughout. Add in some pretty complex emotions and you’ve got the recipe for an unforgettable horror flick.
Airplane (Comedy)
When it comes to comedy, you’d be hard-pressed to find a bigger name than the unmatchable Leslie Nielsen, and this film showcases him at his best. If you’ve somehow missed it, it’s a hilarious take on the disaster/action movies of the 70s with one-liners that come fast and furious. The comedy and gags still hold up 40 years later and if you watch this, you’ll probably find a few quotes you had no idea originated here.
Why stream it?
Because it’s probably one of the funniest spoofs of all time.
Hustlers (Drama)
At first glance, this just sort of looks like a female take on The Hangover. But once you see a gang of strippers turn to darker methods to earn money, you see where this film is headed – a crime drama. Of course, you learn the reasons for the women’s actions and see them meet some fascinating characters along the way, and the movie ends up telling a pretty good story.
Why stream it?
It’s a story of survival and friendship done so well that even as you see the women use less-than-legal methods to get money and leave victims in their wake, you’re rooting for them all the way.
Kill Bill Volume 1 and Kill Bill Volume 2 (Action)
This one warrants a double entry as Quentin Tarantino’s tribute to classic martial arts movies transcended the genre. The story doesn’t much matter – just sit back for an absolute romp of a revenge tale with stunning visuals. A word of warning though: if you haven’t seen these films, the violence is off the charts. There’s copious blood and gore (this is Tarantino after all), many times in show-stopping slow motion just to drive it home.
Why stream it? To say these films were unprecedented may be an understatement. They’re worth watching just for the absolutely beautiful choreography of the fight scenes.
A Dog’s Journey (Family)
Follow up film to A Dog’s Purpose, you pretty much know what you’re getting with the title. There’s a dog, and that’s about all that matters. It’s a sugary sweet story about the bond between dogs and their humans and of course it’s a tear-jerker. Spoiler alert: While plenty of dog movies have the main character pass away, this film throws reincarnation into the mix, so you get to witness that same concept again and again. Just a warning if you’ll have kids watching.
Why stream it? The same reason you watch any family-friendly dog movie – to be reminded that dogs really can be our best friends
