How Digital Marketing Came Into Existence

Marketing has been an important aspect from the times unknown, the demand and supply of the items made the exchange of resources as a necessity. Soon after the invention of computers, the changes like storing huge data could be seen as the memory capacity was increased. Then the idea of connecting with the world digitally was widely accepted as storing the information about the next person became easy. As it was the year 1986 when the first database software was introduced, essentially to propose an evident change in the business world. The very first search engine ‘Archie’ was developed as a project by a group of students at McGill University School of Computer and Science. It was back in 1987 when the requirement of connecting the school to the internet was to be met and that was the time when a Telnet protocol was used for the login and search purpose.

Sear products were promoted by the Prodigy in the 1980s’ but could not succeed well in the first attempt and Global Network Navigator won the race by selling the first clickable web ad in 1993. Along with web ads, GNN was also successful in becoming the first commercial website. Around May 1994 online marketing was enhanced leaving behind the traditional practices. There were many upgrades that took place during that time, and in July 1995 the first central Ad server was released by Focalink Communications. The centralized ad server made it possible to manage and track the online ads. Meanwhile, the market saw a great change when the search engine ‘Yahoo’ was founded in January 1994; its founders Jerry Yang and David Filo were glad at the time of its incorporation on March 2, 1995.

The year 1996 saw minute, but important changes like the launch of different search engines, namely: HotBot, LookSmart, Alexa. Social media earned attention with the first social media site ‘SixDegrees.com’. Year 1998 was a turnaround point for the world, as encouraged by the supervisor, Terry Winogard; Larry Page and Sergery Brin gave birth to ‘Google’. At first, the domain used by the search engine was ‘Google.stanford.edu’ later, by 15 September 1997 the domain ‘Google.com’ was registered. While people started to love the user-friendly design of Google search engine, there were some shutdowns too. The mall search engines were out of the market, the very first social media site ‘SixDegrees.com’ was also wiped out.

Important changes took place by the year 2005, with the launch of LinkedIn, MySpace, Gmail. Along with the release of WordPress in 2003 social sharing took a new dimension as people started sharing their interests soon after they were familiar with its use. The launch of YouTube gave access to upload and view the videos. It was the year 2004 when Google and Facebook came live to the public.

In 2006 MS Live Search was launched by the Microsoft, which attracted many users, and the launch of Twitter gave an introduction to the tweets from the common people as well as the famous personalities. With so many developments in a decade, it was in 2014 when the mobile exceeded the PC internet usage. After this change the market realized that people have moved more towards the mobile usage and the youth is to be targeted on the smartphones.

With new practices and improvements, the concept of marketing was changed all over. Major changes were seen in digital marketing agency in India, Austria, Singapore, Denmark, Belgium, Israel, Hong Kong changed. The world started to picturise it in a different manner and the definition of marketing entertained a broader concept.
